Don’t Delay! Get Rid Of Mold And Mildew

A person who has not experienced the onset of mold in a house may not know what it is in the early stages.  Knowing what mold looks like in the early stage is a great benefit because it does mean that some precautionary steps can be taken immediately to prevent the further growth and it make it so much easier to get rid of mold.

The appearance of mold.

Mold starts to appear as tiny black spots on paintwork and grout and because the spots are so tiny many people do not realise that it is mold until it has grown 10 times in size.  At that stage it could be the size of a pin head.  Another point to look out for is that there would be more than one spot if there is a problem.

As the mold grows it becomes a greenish black color and quite slippery to feel.  It tends to spread sideways rather than grow in depth.  When there is a  large covering of mold it is referred to as mildew.

The color does depend a little on where the mold is growing.  Have you ever pulled a pair of shoes out from the depths of a cupboard to find that they have a green, powdery coating?  I am sure you have seen this.  It is mold, but in the bathroom where there is plenty of light you will find that mold tends to be more black than green.

Causes of mold.

Mold is caused by the growth of mold spores in wet areas and that is why there are more than just the one spot when there is a problem.  It is the environment where the mold gets a hold that means more than just one spore will grow.  Mold spores are in the air at all times but they do need a damp environment to attach themselves to the paintwork and then to multiply and grow.

Dampness will occur in the house usually because of one of the following reasons:

•    The room is not aerated satisfactorily, such as a bathroom after a shower

•    A kitchen when a lot of steam builds up and cannot get away or dried out

•    A dark cupboard that is not aired regularly

•    Behind a wall where a water leak has developed and has not been discovered

•    Rooms on the side of the house away from the sun that do not get warm at any stage – these are often bedrooms and that is why mildew forms in wardrobes so easily

How to get rid of mold and mildew.

If the situation is very bad it will most likely mean that professionals like plumbers and builders will need to be employed to remove or repair certain pipes and to remove wallboards that are ingrained with mold.

If the situation is on the surface of walls and benches then the easiest way to get rid of mold is to use a bleach.   It is best to apply the bleach liquid or powder and leave it overnight, scrub it off and rinse down with a disinfectant.  An eco friendly disinfectant that can be used is a 50/50 mix of water and white distilled vinegar.  This will also freshen up the area.  In bathroom and bedrooms a few drops of eucalyptus oil in the mix will smell nice as well.
