How to clean mold from your home.

Common Winter Allergies

Common Winter Allergies

Winter has arrived and you thought that all your allergies symptoms would go away. The ground is covered in snow and outdoor plants have died or become dormant for the season. Cold and flu season is here but finally, you can have a break from allergies, right?

Wrong. This time of year, it often is not what is outdoors that can be a problem, but rather what is indoors. Because houses are closed up against the cold, allergy triggers can build up inside your house or apartment. Even in winter, these common allergies can keep your symptoms going.

1. Mold – Mold is one of the biggest winter allergy problems, most likely because of the wide variety of mold spore sources. These can include cut wood brought in for heating fuel, improperly ventilated bathrooms, or even your family Christmas tree. Most mold triggers can be reduced by using vent fans and frequently cleaning in high-moisture areas, such as the bathroom.

2. Pet Dander – During the winter months, pets are kept inside more often to protect them from the elements. Unfortunately, this also allows more pet dander to collect in your carpeting and furniture, which can set off allergy symptoms. During the winter season, it is a good idea to limit your pets’ access to certain areas of the house and to vacuum pet hair more frequently.

3. Pollen – How can pollen be a problem in the winter months? For those who live or winter in warmer climates, pollen poses a problem year round. If you are in a warmer region, the hard freezes needed to kill many pollen-producing plants never occur, leaving you susceptible to both indoor and outdoor allergy issues.
